On a Lovina dolphin tour, you board a traditional jukung outrigger boat from 5:30 AM at Lovina Beach, watch the sunrise over the Bali Sea, and spend about two hours on the water looking for wild spinner dolphins before returning in time for breakfast. Here is every step, from booking to stepping back onto the sand.
Many guests message me the night before their trip with the same questions: What time should I wake up? Will it be cold? What if we do not see any dolphins? This guide answers all of them, so you can arrive relaxed and enjoy the morning instead of worrying about the details.

Before the Tour: Booking and Preparation
Booking on WhatsApp
Booking is done directly with me on WhatsApp, with no travel agent in between. Send your preferred date, the number of guests, whether you want a sharing or private boat, and the name of your hotel. I will confirm your seat and send you the exact meeting point. You can pay a deposit, pay by bank transfer, or pay on the spot, whichever is easiest for you.
Sharing Boat or Private Boat?
A sharing boat is the most affordable option and a nice way to meet other travelers. A private boat means the jukung is reserved only for your group, so you can take your time with photos and enjoy a quieter morning. Couples, families with small children and photographers usually prefer private. You can compare every option on our tour packages page.
Staying Outside Lovina? Plan Your Transport
Lovina is on the north coast of Bali, far from the southern tourist areas. Depending on traffic, the drive takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Ubud and around 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Seminyak, Canggu or Kuta. To make a 5:30 AM departure, most guests either stay one night in Lovina or book our hotel pick-up service, which brings you door to door in an air-conditioned car with a local driver. Pick-up from Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu and Kuta is at 3:00 AM, so you reach Lovina in time for sunrise.
Step by Step: Your Morning on the Water
By 5:45 AM: Arrive at the Beach
The beach is still dark and quiet when guests arrive. Boats start going out from 5:30 AM, so please arrive no later than 5:45 AM. The first hour of daylight is when dolphins are most active, and every minute counts. Enjoy a cup of coffee while the boats are prepared.
Life Jackets On and Push Off
Every guest receives a life jacket before boarding, and we have child-size life jackets for younger guests. The jukung is pushed from the sand into the water, the engine starts, and we head out into the calm morning sea. The outriggers on both sides keep the boat stable, so it feels steadier than many people expect.
Sunrise Over the Bali Sea
As we move offshore, the sky slowly turns orange behind the mountains of North Bali. Depending on the month, the sun rises roughly between 6:00 and 6:30 AM. Have your camera ready: the silhouettes of the jukung boats against the sunrise are one of the most beautiful views in Bali.

Finding the Wild Dolphins
Lovina is home to wild dolphins that feed in these waters early in the morning, mostly spinner dolphins that are famous for leaping and spinning in the air. I read the surface of the sea to see where a pod is moving, then position the boat ahead of them and turn off the engine as they come closer. We never chase the dolphins. Letting them approach on their own terms is better for the animals and gives you longer, calmer sightings.
You will see other boats in the area too, because many local families in Lovina work on the water. A good captain keeps a respectful distance from both the dolphins and the other boats.

Around 7:30 AM: Back to Shore
After about two hours on the water, we return to Lovina Beach in time for breakfast. Many guests use the rest of the day to explore North Bali or simply relax at their hotel.

How Likely Are You to See Dolphins?
Dolphins are wild animals, so no honest captain can guarantee a sighting. From experience, morning trips see dolphins more than 90% of the time in the dry season (April to October) and around 75 to 85% of the time in the rainy season. If you want to plan the perfect month, read my guide to the best time to see dolphins in Lovina.
Safety always comes first. I check the sea every morning, and if conditions are not safe, the trip does not go out and we message you on WhatsApp.
What to Bring on a Sunrise Dolphin Tour
A light jacket or long sleeves, because it can feel cool on the water before sunrise
Your phone or camera in a waterproof bag
Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat for the trip back, when the sun is already up
Comfortable clothes and sandals you do not mind getting a little wet
If you get seasick easily, eat something light and ask your pharmacist about motion sickness tablets before the trip.
Tips for a Better Dolphin Watching Experience
Stay seated when dolphins appear. Sudden movement rocks the boat and can ruin your photos.
Keep your voice low. A quiet boat makes for calmer dolphins.
Use burst mode or video. Spinner dolphins jump fast, and a few seconds of video often captures more than single photos.
Put the camera down for a moment. Some of the best memories are the ones you simply watch.

Make the Most of Your Morning
Many guests combine dolphin watching with time in the water. The Sunrise & Dolphin Watching tour is the classic choice, and you can upgrade your morning with these options:
Swimming With Dolphin: IDR 225,000 sharing / IDR 250,000 private
Dolphin, Swim & Snorkeling Combo: IDR 300,000 sharing / IDR 350,000 private
Snorkeling at Coral Reef: IDR 150,000 sharing / IDR 175,000 private
Bioluminescent Plankton Night Tour: IDR 200,000 sharing / IDR 250,000 private
