Lovina Plankton Tour: Seeing Bioluminescent Plankton at Night in North Bali

A different side of Lovina: the sea that glows at night
Most visitors know Lovina for one thing: wild dolphins at sunrise. But after dark, the same calm water of North Bali can show you something just as magical. On the right night, every movement in the sea lights up with tiny blue-green sparks. Run your hand through the water and it leaves a glowing trail. Put your face in with a snorkel mask and it can feel like swimming through stars.
This is bioluminescent plankton, and our Lovina plankton tour takes you out on a traditional outrigger boat to see it. In this guide we explain what the glow is, when you have the best chance to see it, what happens on the tour, and what it costs, honestly and without exaggeration.
What is bioluminescent plankton?
Bioluminescent plankton are microscopic sea creatures, mostly a group called dinoflagellates, that produce their own light. When the water around them is disturbed, by a paddle, a boat, a fish or your hand, they release a short flash of blue-green light. One flash is tiny. Millions of them together create the glowing effect you see in the water.
The light is not constant. It only appears when the water moves, and it is much easier to see when the night is truly dark.
What to expect on our plankton night tour
Departure: after dark from Lovina Beach. We confirm the exact time on WhatsApp because it depends on sunset and conditions on your date.
Duration: about 90 minutes.
Boat: a traditional Balinese outrigger boat (jukung) with a local captain and guide.
Included: a life jacket for every guest and a snorkel mask for underwater viewing.
Group size: small groups only, or book the whole boat privately.
We take the boat away from the lights of the beach to darker water. Once your eyes adjust to the darkness, the guide shows you how to bring out the glow. Guests who are comfortable in the water can slip in with a mask and life jacket to see it from below. Guests who prefer to stay dry can still watch the sparks from the side of the boat.
When is the best time to see the glow?
Bioluminescence is a natural event, so no one can promise it on a specific night. These are the conditions that matter most:
A dark sky. The darker the night, the brighter the glow looks. Nights around the new moon are usually best. A bright full moon makes the plankton much harder to see.
Calm water. Lovina's sheltered north coast is often calm in the evening, which helps.
The season and the water itself. The amount of plankton changes through the year and from week to week.
Because of this, we always tell guests honestly what to expect on their dates before they book. If the conditions are poor, we will say so and suggest another night.
Honest expectations
Many photos of glowing water online are long exposures or heavily edited. In real life the glow is softer: bright flashes and sparkling trails rather than a sea that shines by itself. Most phone cameras struggle to capture it, so this is a tour to enjoy with your own eyes. Give your eyes several minutes in the dark without looking at your phone screen, and you will see much more.
